I have SP1 installed, but still see the problem with Control Panel and
Chess Titans not starting.

Never mind, looks like this computer doesn't have SP1 installed...
although Windows Update doesn't even show SP1 as an available
download.  So both Dell (for not installing SP1 even though we ordered
the computer 6 weeks after SP1 was released) and Microsoft (for not
showing SP1 in Windows Update even though the computer does not have
SP1 installed) are idiots.

Above link is different ways to get SP1.
And I have never had a prob with the Control Panel,
But,, I use Vista disks, not DELL crap loaded disks!

SP1 is not offered if WU detects problem drivers. Nothing to do with MS
being idiotic at all, quite the reverse.

Problem drivers were not the problem in my case.  I had seen a few
updates that needed to be installed from Windows Update the last
couple weeks, but didn't bother to install them (SP1 was not one of
them).  And the computer is configured to automatically install
updates every day, so I don't know why Windows didn't install them
automatically.  I finally installed them tonight, and then went back
into Windows Update, and that's when it finally showed SP1.
Apparently it doesn't show SP1 until after you've installed all the
other updates.  I think that is different behavior than Windows Update
on previous versions of Windows.

No; same behaviour!

Couldn't agree more. Amazing that these days EVERYTHING is someone else's
fault.

maybe you are the idiot for not asking if it would be installed
