Hi Sonson,
One option is to check the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on
dekstop" option in Visual Effects. This tutorial will show you how to if
needed.

Another option, is to use this great little free program called
"D-Color-XP". It works fine in Vista. You can see more on it here.

I used the D Color to change the desktop icon title. Now I can read.
