I don't know either, but I'd swap the mouse out as a first and easy
troubleshooting step. If you're using your keyboard to select, then swap
the keyboard out instead of the mouse.

It's a known quirk with Vista. Some information from the MS
knowledgebase:

Also, since Vista has per-program audio mixing, you can open the mixer
and turn down the volume for the problem program.
