A few days ago I started getting an annoyong "default beep" sound in certain
programs. ie - when I select articles in Gravity news reader and when I
select channels in my TV tuner program. I don't know what caused this to
start. How can I stop it?

I don't know either, but I'd swap the mouse out as a first and easy
troubleshooting step. If you're using your keyboard to select, then swap
the keyboard out instead of the mouse.

It's a known quirk with Vista. Some information from the MS
knowledgebase:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944150

Also, since Vista has per-program audio mixing, you can open the mixer
and turn down the volume for the problem program.
