About two months ago I downloaded Vista SP1 via Windows Update and installed
it without incident.

Now I have received Vista SP1 on DVD, and am not sure whether I will be
missing anything if I do nothing except file it away in case I need to clean
install at some future time.

Hi,

You won't be missing anything, just tuck it away.

Use it in combination with vlite to create a slipstreamed Vista w/SP1
installation disk.

Then file it away till the next time it might be needed.
