The search pane is only available when in a search folder. Open a documents folder, and type X in the search box. You will then see a search pane in layout, but not till then. I don't need to type anything in the search box. the other panes will permanently show all the time, search pane doesn't. Oh well, I will try to Google my question and see what I get.
