Update Error Code 800B0100

Hi,

I have an update error which seems to be common in Vista, including my
Home Premium. When attempting to download Vista Updates, most of them
are not successful, with an error code 800B0100 appearing on the screen.
Based on searching the net including Microsoft, I have tried various
recommended remedies, none of which works: cmd, run as administrator;
firewall off, antivirus off, etc.. I have not found a solution, nor am I
alone in this quandry. Some have advised me to install XP and delete
Vista Home Premium, but this code error seems to occur in XP also. My
Vista was factory installed, so I have no DVD for
re-installation.Microsoft is reported to have refused to help many
people about this error.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

All that site is telling you is that Vista is having troubles
registering COM DLL(s). The problem may be due to UAC on Vista is
interfering with the registration, and that also, your user/admin
account doesn't have full admin rights to do the registration.

It's being explained in the link.

<http://chrisbensen.blogspot.com/2007/02/com-registration-under-microsoft.html>

It's also talking about using the hidden built-in Administrator account,
yes, that same built-in Administrator account on XP.

fits_of_Vistas_Hidden_Administrator_Account
>

You should read the information in the link, like read the section about
the benefits of using the Administrator account, which is the account is
a admin account that has full admin rights all the time and UAC can
still be enabled.

As opposed to using your default out of the box user/admin account on
Vista that does not have full rights, because of the two access tokens
being used on the user/admin account, with the default being the
Standard user token. And that's why you must run something with Run As
Administrator so that it can access to the Admin Full rights token and
escalate privileges, not so with the built-in Administrator account.

What do you have to loose at this point by not trying it? You just may
want to download the KB's manually go into safe mode and login using the
Administrator user account.

You might want to do this first, just on GP.

Hi to TauArian and to the other people who answered my query:

I fear that I've been led into a classic Catch-22 situation. I can't get
Vista Updates due to the 800B0100 error. The suggestion to download the
System Update Readiness Tool involves finding it on the list of
available downloads, but I cannot download any updates in the first
place! In addition, a suggested method for manually downloading that
Tool did not work, as the hourglass icon hung up for more than 15
minutes while the tool bar said transferring from c.microsoft.com.
So, I'm still so frustrated.

I'll try some of your other suggestions, and just hope that something
works.

Thanks again,

Morton

HUH ??? What does this have to do with the OP's issue

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956702

It's based on COM DLL registration issues, which might apply to Vista as
well, in case the Vista tool doesn't resolve the issues. Run as
Administrator with full admin rights to see if that gets things corrected
when doing an update..

Hi Peter,

I'm supposed to download that tool to fix my problem, but getting the
tool is done via Vista Updates, (as per tool instructions), and I CANNOT
get updates in the first place. Is that tool available on a CD? I would
gladly pay for it, if it would help me.

Thanks again for your response.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your nice reply. I had already tried that link, without
success. I just tried it again, and again no success. What happens is
that the hourglass icon appears next to the pointer arrow, and the left
lower toolbar says, "transferring data from c.microsoft.com." This
continues for 15 minutes, at which point I again gave up.(The green bar
at the right lower fills to almost full.) If I click on "download" with
the hourglass icon showing, then I get a partial aborted download.

I am stymied, frustrated, and otherwise unhappy that there does not
appear to be a fix for this that works.

Thanks again.

But the poster will not login with the hidden built-in Administrator account
that has full admin rights that could address those Windows updates that are
not able to install.

And the poster will not do a System File Check to see if that may correct
any problems.

Hi,

More problems. I read about "Repair Your Computer" and tried to find it
with F8 for advanced boot options. I did find it, but when I tried to
turn it on, a choice of accounts showed Administrator, and asked for a
password, which I never had or used. When I tried going further, I got a
message that: "Your account has been disabled. See System Administrator."

So, I may have an Administrator problem, which prevents me from
repairing my updates problem. I know a bit about Windows Administrator
stuff, but obviously not enough to solve this problem.

Can you, or anyone else, help me in this regard?

Thanks again.

All you have to do with your current user/admin account is to go to Control
Panel/Admin Tools/Comp Management/users and groups and select the account in
question and enable it.

If the happens to be the built-in Administrator account, then  enable it and
set a password for it and login with the Administrator account.

If the Administrator account is not activated, they you need to active it. I
gave you that link in a previous post.

IMO, you should to this too, just on GP to see if it corrects a file,
because a bad file a wrong version may be preventing the updates from
working as it tries to do something with a possible bad file.

What do you have to loose at this point?

Hi,Mr. Arnold,

Thanks again for your help, and please forgive me if I occasionally get
lost. I determined that my account is "Mort" and that it is the
Administrator. It is the account that runs when I turn on the computer.
I tried the sfc/scannow last week with no help. I tried now to follow
the instructions in your link about Some Windows Vista Functions May Not
Work---. However, Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then right click
on Command Prompt is not possible, as under Accessories there is no
Command Prompt. So, how do I find the Command Prompt to right click on it?

It is frustrating indeed. I have a post-graduate education, know several
languages, am acquainted with the history of computers, and personally
knew Herman Goldstine who developed the Math that made digital computers
possible. Still, this one problem seems so elusive to a cure.

Again, my thanks.

No, that user/admin account you got out of the box with Vista or any new
user/admin accounts you may create do not have full admin rights.

The admin account in the link is the only account on Vista that has full
admin rights at all times on Vista, which is the same account on XP.
However on XP, all new user/admin accounts inherit full admin rights from
the XP Administrator account. This is not the case on Vista, as the one
you're using and any new user/admin accounts you may create do not inherit
full admin rights from the Vista Administrator account.

That Command Prompt should be in Accessories, like the Run command should be
there in Accessories.

You can go to the Start button Search box and enter Cmd.exe and it should
find it. When it is found, then right-click it and do a Sendto and send the
short-cut to the desktop. You can then right-click the short-cut and set the
Run as Administror off of the Advanced button.

You can do the other thing in the link.

And then you login using the  Administrator user account and try a Windows
Update.

Hi,

I typed in Command Prompt under Start, Search, and got the sfc/scannow
to work. It found corrupted files, and was unable to fix some of them.
It gave me a file where I could see the corrupted files:
C:Windows/Logs/CBS/CBS.log
However, when I typed that file into Search and clicked on it, I got a
notice Access Denied. I guess that it is that Administrator stuff again.

Thanks.

Hi,

I turned off UAC and got to see the corrupted files in question. There
must be a few hundred pages of dense files with various names and
functions.

I guess that I'll take the advice of others and contact Microsoft again
about help. They previously wanted to charge me for support, but I'll
tell them that it is for updates.

Thanks again.

You're wasting your time IMO. I think the O/S has been corrupted badly by
malware or you started installing non Vista compliant software on the
machine.

You need to format the HD, reinstall the O/S,  practice safehex as much as
possible  and try not to install non Vista compliant software on the
machine, which all of it could have created the condition you have at this
moment, if you ever want Windows Updates to work again.

Thanks for your opinion. I tried to be careful. A few weeks ago, my
laptop did not start at all. I sent it to Toshiba Factory Service for a
flat fee of $425 including 2-way shipping. They said that my BIOS was
corrupted, and they "fixed" it. Since I got the unit back from Toshiba,
I have had this update problem and a few others. If Microsoft does not
help, then I'll ask Toshiba if their (expensive)repair carries a
warranty. If yes, then maybe they will fix it, even if it means
reinstalling the O.S..

Again, thanks for all the help.

Maybe, the next time you get a computer, maybe from a retail store, you'll
consider getting an extended warrantee. I have had to send a laptop back a
couple of times, once when I spilled water on the keyboard, and the other
time was the machine would loose power. It didn't cost me a dime for
shipping or anything else. It cost me a couple hundred dollars for the 3
year plan, which can be extended.  It beats paying $425 a shot. :)

Hi Again,

I read in another newsgroup that the following will solve the 800B0100
update error problem:
Delete the contents of C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download.
Well, I did that deletion, and yes the error 800B0100 no longer appears.
Unfortunately, I still can't get my Vista Home Premium updates, because
now I have a new error code: 80072EFD. I seem to have exchanged one
error for another. The net is full of reports of these errors, but no
solutions. It is very frustrating.

Thanks.

LOL, I am laughing with you not at you. Of course, all of this could still
be due to the corruption of O/S files, right? I would have nipped this in
the bud long ago and just would have formatted the HD and reinstalled the
O/S.
