I have an Acer PC with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 rc. If I do not like Windows7 (or have issues with it) and want to revert to Vista, can I simply uninstall the Upgrade? -- I do not have a disc copy of Vista. You install the software and then can create virtual machines running various operating systems. For instance, I'm running a virtual machine of SUSE Linux (from which I'm writing you this post) using the Mac version of VMware (Fusion) hosted on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.7. I have VMWare Workstation installed on one of my Windows XP machines to run Vista Ultimate in a virtual machine. There are other virtualization programs. Microsoft's Virtual PC is free as is VirtualBox. VMware is not free but I like it best. To learn more about virtualization, go to the various websites or Google "virtualization software". There are limitations to virtualization because the *hardware* is virtualized. For instance, you will not want to run an OS in a virtual machine if you are a gamer and need excellent 3D support. Nope, you'll have to do a clean install of Vista to get back to Vista. > I do not have a disc copy of Vista. Why not? You should either make one by following the instructions in your manual or order one from Acer. If your hard drive dies, you'll be out of luck, won't you? > Thanks and Cheers...Robert You're welcome Alias Your Acer should have a recovery Parition, and it will probably have the means to create the recovery dvd's If you havent done this you need to do so now!! Your Acer has an image of the machine as it came from the factory on a special partition on the hard drive. However, if you damage that partition or the hard drive dies, the image will be lost. Your Acer comes with a way to create physical recovery discs. Look in your manual or on Acer's tech support website to see how to do this. Create the recovery discs *now*. Then you can install Windows 7 if you like knowing that you'll have to problem replacing it with Vista if you don't like it. An alternative (and I think better) solution is to image your Vista install with a program like Acronis True Image and store the image on an external hard drive. Then you can quickly restore your computer to its current state, regardless of whether it is running XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Do What I did. Shrink the Vista partition and install Windows 7 RC1 in a new partition. It will create a dual boot menu for you and you will have both. Upgrade to Win7RC? You can't without jumping through technical hoops. Why all this rush to "upgrade" to Win7?? As suggested, you would be better off using Vista to shrink your HD, create a new partition and install Win7 as a dual boot to TEST it. And as also stated, you more than likely have a recovery partition which enables you to restore your computer to a factory state. (To the original state when you bought the computer.) I can't for the life of me, figure out why people are so eager to dump their main OS and install something that EXPIRES, get it, E-X-P-I-R-E-S next year! What are you people thinking?? The final release begins Oct 22. Until then, dl and TEST the RC to determine if you want Win7 or not! GEEZE! Get a clue!! Do your homework! No, you will have to wipe out the drive and then do a clean install of Vista. If you are not comfortable dual booting, then just do as already suggested and use a virtual machine. (Vmware, Virtual Box or MS's own Virtual Machine)It's not all that hard to install and set up a virtual machine, and install an OS into it. However, you will not get a real world test that way, (How it ACTUALLY performes on your machine), as virtual machines use generic drivers etc. ..BUT, you can at least run the OS and decide if you like the user interface, new things and so on.
