Difficult issue: audio in safe mode: how to manually install if possible

Vista Home premium, SP2.  HP Pavilion Notebook.  Have to run in -SAFE
mode with networking- for next week till new hard drive arrives.

I will then install it as my computer will not boot in normal mode.  HP
Warranty is replacing hard drive.

But as an aside, I can access my hard drive and copy files to my
external HDD.
(big WHEW!)

In the meantime, I  wish to use the Internet to access audio via HULU
or other sites.

How can I manually access my audio while in safe mode?  Please give
specific directions if this can be done, which I suspect it can be done.

I reinstalled the audio driver and it indicates that driver is
installed and now I need to find a way to access the audio.  Will be
very happy if I can sort this out.

Please advise,

Cordially,
Robert

I don't believe it can be done. The whole point of Safe Mode is to load the
operating system with as few drivers and background processes as possible.
Because your antivirus will not be running in Safe Mode, it isn't safe to
surf the Internet from there either.

Sorry.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I understand it may be impossible to enable audio in Safe Mode with
Networking, but is it possible?

I do not 'surf' the Internet but go to only trusted and tested mostly
password protected sites, check emails and the like.

Besides in a few days I will be removing and replacing my hard drive.

I merely wish to activate the audio to watch on line TV (I have no
television) or watch a dvd movie in my library.  The DVD rom drive still
works in safe mode, (as do many programs) but not my printer or audio,
so why not access audio (and local printer) too?

If, a big IF, it is possible please supply specific directions for
audio and local printer. (apparenty printer spooler is disabled and I
can not figure how to enable this feature either)

I suspect it may be possible and have not determined the way to do
either or both, yet.

If it is not possible please add this acommodation to Windows 7.  Would
be a nice feature for those of us who are responsible and require
Internet to be connected during hardware malfunctions, as well as having
at least limited local printing in Safe mode.

Robert

As I said in my first post, I don't believe it is possible to do what you
want. Of course, I don't know everything (more's the pity) so perhaps
someone else will give you a way.

I have no ability to tell Microsoft what to put into Windows 7. You could
look on the Win7 homepage and see if there is a place to make suggestions
for the next version of Win7 (it is feature-complete at this point).

Thank you.

Right clicked on the Icon, as I have been doing all day.

Message that shows up indicates:
"Status is not available for this device when Windows is running in
Safe Mode."

Yet, the driver is installed and the speakers are showing as working,
but Windows has disabled sound accessibility.  Any other suggestions?

Looking for other sites also that might help.

There must be a workaround?

I really don't know why you think there must be a workaround. Safe Mode does
what it is designed to do. What you want it to do is outside its design
parameters.

I really don't have anything else to add. I'm sorry I was unable to help
you.

Actually, Malke,

you've been a great help.

My m.o. is to find a way to do something; if there's away, I 'll find
it.

It may be perhaps that there is not a way to get audio while in safe
mode and if that is so, then so be it.

You seem consistent with other Microsoft experts: hence no audio in
safe mode and I can not run Vista in normal mode for some reason related
to my hard drive failure.

I am flustered that my hard drive has faulted and I can access it and
all my files and many of my programs (and run Firefox in Safe mode and
access the Internet) but the drive must be replaced.

New hard drive arriving in a few days according to HP.

In the meantime I wish to watch some Internet TV and can not.  Can't
even watch a DVD movie.

Oh well, reading is a great past-time.  As is researching and
experimenting.

Cordially,
Robert

I think normal boot is here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class

and here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

If you are able to see the speaker icon in the lower right taskbar, right
click it. Then look at the Playback and Recording Devices to ensure the
correct default devices are selected. Then check the Properties to make sure
audio levels are high enough.

It is not possible to activate audio services and/or drivers in any safe
mode.  That would defeat the purpose of safe mode in the first place - to
load a minimally-capable Windows system in the event that added software,
drivers, etc. prevent a normal startup to happen.  The same is true of most
other devices as Windows loads either a generic driver or no driver at all.
