Hi. I have a dell 4550 and xp sp2. Any piece of hardware i try to connect via
usb just comes up in device manager under other hardware with yellow question
marks. Nothing new will connect up, dont know whether a setting has changed
or something. Previously any new hardware would install easily via the
software and on screen instructions.

Go back to the Device Manager and scroll to the bottom - USB Controllers.
Now rightclick any of the USB controllers/hubs and see if they are disabled.
