Although I see two messages I sent about this on 9/22 in my Sent folder, I
do not see that either has been posted to the group.  Neither these nor
previous submissions were located by Find.

I have copied and pasted these letters in order.   Incidentally, I did get
the patch for MS03-039 having located it somewhere in the many pages I
looked at....was a "download security patches" link.

Kelli, let me see if I can put this in a nutshell.  When I open Windows
Update, I get a small window asking if I want to log on as Current User or
Other User.  Selecting Current User and clicking OK
takes me to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp  which is
labeled "Administrators Only."

This tells me: To run as the local administrator in Windows XP or Windows
Server 2003:

1.. Click Start, and then click All Programs (or right-click Windows
Update if it is available).
 2.. Right-click Windows Update.
3.. Click Run as on the menu that appears.
4.. Do one of the following:
a.. Enter the password for the administrator.
b.. Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user
account that has administrative permissions on this computer.
Possibly my problem is that I never set a password ANYWHERE.

No matter what I do, I never get a window that says "Welcome to Windows
Update"...only that Administrators Only window.   Everything in the left
pane is faded out.

Re: Link for "scan for updates"...I do not have  that particular link.
Somewhere on a Windows page there was a Windows Update, which I clicked and
it took me to the same old form that wanted me to sign on as Current User or
Other User.

The strangest thing about this is that I have previously gotten updates and
have never before had to sign in as Current or Other user.

If the scan for updates link may help me, will you please send it?
Thanks...

Ann

Later:
Now I'm replying to my own mail!  Subsequently, I've taken a couple of
different approaches.

Went to Troubleshooting, located my problem, backed up the Registry and
edited as directed.
Went to Registry back-up and replaced it.

That didn't help.

Next, I gave myself a Windows password, re-booted, used it to enter Windows.
Went to Windows Update, signed on as Other User,  used my user name and
password.  Got a little window telling me

C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUPDMGR.EXE
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

Any suggestions for this one? My Windows XP is the Home Edition that came
with my pc.

BUT, I still can't get anything from Windows Update!

I'll repost my reply from the other thread here, just in case.  I got them,
anyway.  ;)

So, you aren't running as an administrator, which is what you need to do to
install updates.  Have you tried simply entering "Owner" as the user, and
not entering a password for it?

I don't think the link will help you - what I suspect is that your account
doesn't have the privlages to install.

Try this:
1) Go Start - Control Panel - User Accounts
2) Post the list of users that appear there, and what kind of account they
have (it should be listed under the account) and if it says that they are
"Password Protected" or not.

I highly suspect this is a user permissions issue, although it's odd that
you were able to do it at one point but not now.  Let's check and see what
your account is listed as, and go from there.

There is only one User account named Communal and it was not previously
password protected.  I did give it a password a couple of days ago and it
has been password protected ever since.

Using that Communal and its password still throws me to the Administrators
Only page where everything on the left is faded out.

Now I have gone to User Accounts and found that Communal is designated as
the Computer Administrator.   Trying to open the Updates using Communal and
its password, gives me that error message
"C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUPDMGR.EXE
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it."

The last option on the Administrators Only page tells me to look at Update
Properties, click the Shortcut tab and select Run as Different User.  Run as
Different User is not on the Shortcut tab and there is no shortcut
designated.  The Advanced button doesn't lead to that option.

Even logging in as Owner?  Curious...

What it means with the run as is the Run As stuff you've already tried.

Have you tried creating a new computer administrator/owner and trying it
from that account?
