I get a message when starting the computer that a network
service failed to start. please check your event log for
details. Does anybody know where I can find the log and
what the cause might be

The cause may be in the Event log.  Open My Computer, open Administrative
Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors that are applicable, you may have
to double click the error to find out if its applicable but the information
contained within may give a clue as to the source of the issue.
