Microsoft Word can't open due to incorrect format

I created a research paper in Microsoft Word with Word tables and excel tables inserted in the document and saved it to a disk. Now when I open the file, it states that there is a table in my document that needs formatting and that I should find the table and do so. But when I click OK, it comes back with an error saying the format of the document is not recognized. It has nothing to do with the disk, because all of my other documents open with no problems. This is the only copy I have of this report and I can't open it. Is there a way to extract the text without the tables? Is there a fix that I can use to correct the problem?
