If the files were protected by permissions, you can take ownership to
regain access:
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=308421

You have not told us how you added password protection to the files. Taking
ownership is successful when the files are protected by permissions. It
cannot circumvent protections put in place by other programs. Give the
above procedure a try. If you end up with some files that you still cannot
access, you'll need to post back with more information about them.
