missing fule on xp

need help for a friend who is having trouble with his xp
home, when he starts up he recieves a message
(windows root)system 32/ntoskrnl.exe.
HE wants to avoid full recovery as he cannot back up his
work and does have some stuff on it that needs back up
grateful for any help

Install xp cd,exit the info page,then go to run,type:cmd  In cmd
type:Sfc /Scannow   Run the DOS window in Min.,a graph runs
with this utility and sometimes runs behind the DOS window,when
the graph is thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F  Then type:EXIT  Restart computer,
remove xp cd.
