Windows XP BLOCKS more than half my programs

I have Windows XP Professional with SP 1. Something has recently started
giving me trouble with the OS that has never given me trouble before.

More than half my programs are now BLOCKED from running or starting-- I get
a popup alert that says, "16-bit Windows Subsystem:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application."

Whether I choose close or Ignore, the program shuts down/fails to start up.

I am getting tired of this happening, and all my programs being blocked from
working when they weren't before.

Is there any solution to this problem?

AUTOEXEC.NT is either missing or corrupted. Copy the one in \windows\repair
to \windows\system32 and try again.
