yesterday installed regular update from microsoft
following a download, sometime after the screen froze (a
common occurence unfortunately), however this time
attempts to reboot are failing.
Used f8, Have tried to boot in safe mode but get no
where.Also tried all other modes.
Normal loading screen appears, followed by a light blue
screen suggestingchecking file system in fat32.
Then a dark blue screen, but it is to quick to read.
Machine then reboots again. If I skip disc check the
result is the same.
I have no boot cd or disc as the xp programme is installed
onto my hd.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

I'm hoping that you did not install an update that came as an attachment to
an email. If you did, you fell victim to a common ploy. MS never sends
updates in this manner. The attachment on an email that purports to be from
MS contains a "patch" that installs a virus.
Even if this was a legitimate download/install that you obtained directly
from Windows Update -- you have lost access to your system and do not have
the tools on the XP CD to recover. If any of the safe mode options had been
available, you could have used System Restore but that avenue is blocked
too.
If the only method you received to restore your computer was an OEM on-disk
recovery program you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle. You are
just about out of options at this point. The only one I see left open to
you at this point is contacting the manufacturer's tech support.
