I am attempting to backup my hard drive onto a DVD. I have Windows XP Home Edition. I have installed the backup portion of Windows and have followed the procedures provided by Microsoft. My issue is that I do not have the option of choosing the backup destination and the default file name of "Backup" will not work. You need third party software. The Backup app is not designed to backup to CD or DVD. To add to the problem XP's built in burning software can not write to DVD anyway. As others have said, you can not backup directly to DVD (or CD) using the Microsoft program called Ntbackup.exe, which comes on the XP CDROM. Worse, even if you could get the info onto a DVD, how would you perform a recovery? Ntbackup runs from within XP. If XP is not working, at least half-way decently, you may not be able to run Ntbackup. This is a catch 22 of this program. Yes, you could always do a clean install form the XP CD, then run Ntbackup to overwrite that, but as you see, it could get complex. I suggest that you look into third-party backup software, which can be run from bootable media (CD or floppy). The image does not need ot be on the CD or floppy, as that is just a way to bypass XP, when it is not working, or to restore an image of the partition containing XP. I have had good luck with Acronis True Image (verison 8). Norton GHOST (version 9) is also a possibility. So the best you can do is backup files and you can only reinstall the files from Windows.
