Hi-I asked this ? once before, got an answer & replied that it worked because
I did not want to hurt anyone's feelings.  It did not work.
Somehow, in My PC my drive icon positions are all screwed up.
A=floppy, D=cd/dvd drive(o.k. so far), H=cd/dvd rw, E, F, G, I all=removable
disc, & J=a virtual drive(by the way Virtual CD v7 is a neat program for
this).
Disk management won't let me change any letter to one previous in the
alphabet.  For example, I want H (cd/dvd rw) to be E but this is not
allowed-my choices being unused values k through z.
My alternative is to "add to an empty NTFS folder."  I don't know how
to do this, or even if it is a solution.
I upgraded my XP Pro, & also disconnected my cd drives & then
re-connected.  Zilch.
It's a minor problem that does not affect performance, but it's simply
not right.  HP Pavilion 530J, XP PRO OS, 2 gigs ram, 200 HD. Intel 4.  Can
someone help or direct me to an article?  Thanks-Alan

hi!
to make your CD become E, you'll need to unplug all your removable disks so
that the E become available! Then assign E to your CD and replug your
removable disks; it should work.
Now, if you can't unplug them, try to assign the E drive to K (and then E
will be available for your CD!)
NB: the disk manager can only propose available letters! as letters A->J
were assigned, it cannot porpose them anymore!! That's why it started with K

Bye

Thanks Thierry-this time it worked!
PS:  Do you, or anyone else reading, know why the letter B is never used for
anything?  Just curious.

It's reserved for a second floppy drive. I believe it's a left
over from the early days of personal computers when you could
have a 3½ and a 5¼ inch floppy drive in the same computer.

The letter B is reserved for a floppy disk.

(A & B are for floppy drives}

It's not true that it's never used for anything. A and B are used for
diskette drives. Back in the early days of PCs, before hard drives were
common, many machines had only two diskette drives. Today in these days of
readily-available cheap hard drives, having two diskette drives, while still
possible, is very rare.

Having even one diskette drive is getting to be rare these days. In a few
more years people may start asking why the letters  A and B are never used.

It was - a B: floppy drive!
when PC's had A: B: and C: drives.  A: & B: were floppy drives usually 3.5"
and 5.25" or 2 x 5.25".
