This is normal behavior. Windows is hiding some of your notifications to
keep more of the TaskBar available. It hides ones whose programs have been
idle. If you want to change this behavior, right click on the TaskBar and
make sure it is unlocked (Lock the Taskbar needs to be unchecked). Then
right click on the Taskbar and choose Properties. On the Taskbar tab
uncheck the botttom checkbox (Hide Inactive Icons). Click Apply and OK and
then lock the TaskBar again.

I cannot control my dail-up connection after it is connected. When I
click on the desktop icon, the "status" category is not highlighted so
I cannot click on it. I cannot get the dail-up icon to appear in my
taskbar. The only way to disconnect from the internet is to shut down
the computer. The taskbar IS unlocked. The box in the properties
section of the dail-up window for showing the icon IS checked. Can
anyone tell me whats going on?

I have the same problem and I solve that by clicking the shortcut on my
desktop which then allows me to disconnect
In my case I am using Wanadoo Broadband.
