Is there a way to play music files with the .m4a extention in media Player?
I tried the converting software and made them mp3s but it didn't work so well.
Any ideas?

It looks like an "iffy" project - "iffy" it looks like the digital rights
attached to the m4a files may not allow conversion or "good" conversion.
Checking Google's Web and Google's Group results on "m4a files convert to
mp3," there doesn't appear to be one single good way to do this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=m4a+files+convert+to+mp3

Alternative: I haven't tried this but (also according to Google), you can
change the extension to .mp4 and play the file in QuickTime. Or leave the
extensions alone and download the iTune player to listen to these files.

You can use total video convert to play and convert.

I don't know of a good way, but I think even theoretically the
conversion is problematic since both are "lossy" formats.

Why not just download the free Windows version of iTunes from Apple?
<http://www.apple.com/itunes/> It works just fine as a player even if
you don't have an iPod.
