How do you register non microsoft file types in XP search?

Hi

how do i register a filtype in search in XP?

We have text files with .mvt extensions which XP search ignores when you try
and find a string within a file

In Windows Explorer:
Tools | Folder Options  File Types | New

file type is already there, though it defaults to open with a non microsoft
text editor.

I seem to remember from previously that you need to hack the registry??
