I'll be installing XP Home on a friend's computer this weekend, but the
512mb memory I ordered won't get there until I'm about to leave. She has
128mb. Will XP install and run in that? I anticipate much swapping to disk.

Thanks.

Thanks, don't bother -- it dawned on me to look it up on the microsoft site.
(Doh!). The answer is XP Home will actually run in 64mb. But not very well.

Ed;
You got it correct.
It will run but slowly, other than that no problems with Windows XP.
Simply install the new memory when it arrives and your friend will see a
huge difference in performance.

Also, make sure you reset the swap file after installing the new RAM. During
install, XP manually sets the swapfile size, if you add more RAM you need to
increase it or set it to auto.

Yes.

Yes, it will be slow, for that reason.

A more appropriate description would be to say that Windows XP will
"walk very very slowly" on a computer with 128 mb of RAM.  But it
should install and boot up okay, given enough time.

When you do get the 512 mb in place it will seem like you actually
installed a rocket inside the computer.

Good luck
