More memory?

Hi All-A long question w/o any real knowledge of what I'm talking about-par
for the course.  I have a Sandra 2005 program (PC performance analyzer) that
tells me I have too little Windows' memory.  I have a 2005 HP Pavillion 530
J; XP Pro, DSL, Pentium 4 (D), 200 gig HD-95% free, Intel 925GV board, with 1
gig DDR SDRAM memory with room for a total of 4 gigs.
All seems to work great.  Do I really need more memory?
As Always-Thanks, Alan

If you are happy with the performance you don't need more memory. One gig is
more than sufficient for the average and slightly above average user.

Now, if you are into video editing and heavy photo editing (using PhotoShop)
more memory "may" be an advantage.

I've never thought much f Sandra, and always thought it was a poor product.
Your message adds fuel to that point of view.

Highly unlikely. In fact my guess is that you already have considerably more
than you need.

How much RAM you need  is *not* a one-size-fits-all situation. You get good
performance if the amount of RAM you have keeps you from using the page
file, and that depends on what apps you run. Most people running a typical
range of business applications find that somewhere around 256-384MB works
well, others need 512MB. Almost anyone will see poor performance with less
than 256MB. Some people, particularly those doing things like editing large
photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even more than
512MB--sometimes much more.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory will
decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance. If you are
not using the page file significantly, more memory will do nothing for you.
Go to http://billsway.com/notes%5Fpublic/winxp%5Ftweaks/ and download
WinXP-2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your pagefile usage. That should give you
a good idea of whether more memory can help, and if so, how much more.

Thanks-I use my PC, primarily, for researching subject matter I'd like to
learn about.  A touch of photo editing with PSP X but nothing heavy duty, in
any area.  For fun, & education, I'll try Bill's way!

You're welcome. Glad to help. It sounds like you should have more than
enough RAM.

It may be reporting that you need more virtual memory.  The
computer needs enough reserved space on the hard drive to
page the contents of the RAM when you open new programs or
large files.

Hi again,
The help I get from all of you is much valued & appreciated.
I have one more question in reference to what Jim said re: virtual
memory.  It's set at "system managed" size-1522 MB.  I tried increasing it
once to 3000 MB-don't ask me why-& Sandra 2005, which I'm thinking about
removing anyway, said it was too much.  So....?
On a personal note about Sandra, don't EVER try to get a refund.  It
took me 3 months, Discover Card involvement, etc. to get my money back for
Sandra 2007-which I should never have downloaded in the first place.  That
was a mistake on my part.
