Not a huge problem, really, but I would like my settings back to the way they
were before.

Looking to restore the on-screen volume control that pops up and then goes
away when you press the volume up/down buttons on the keyboard/laptop. I am
not talking about the volume icon in the taskbar.

The on-screen control disappeared when I was adjusting the volume and
accidentally hit the mouse or touch pad and clicked something (some sort of
menu came up, i believe.  but it was only there for a split second and i
didnt get a chance to see what it said) within the volume box and the box
went away.  After trying to adjust the volume again, the box would not come
up on the screen.

I've looked all through XP and this site and cant find any help on it....
Any suggestions???

I have a MS Keyboard with M/media controls (with a graphic that comes up
with the volume up/down indicator)

I expect you have a similar thing - but it has to do with the
hardware/keyboard itself on your computer, not with Windows generally.
Therefore you should contact the computer vendor you purchased the system
from, or to the manufacturer of the laptop for the drivers/software that
drives the keyboard/multimedia functions of the laptop.
