New machine ~ Gateway GT5220 w/XP-MCE & 2G  now about 3 mths old

Over this 3 mth period, McAfee (spelling?) prompts me to buy, buy, buy.
Have been using Norton stuff for virus, etc. w/McAfee turned off (though
could not stop the buy prompts).

Meanwhile, I have been experiencing blue screens - a different machine
problem each time the screen comes up.  The box house where I bought the
machine suggested that I execute a restore.  While data is on other drives,
this would mean reinstalling a lot of apps.

For no other reason than the annoyance of McAfee buy prompts, I
removed/uninstalled all of the McAee stuff.

For two days now (since removal of McAfee), the blue screens have stopped.

Anybody want to take a stab at this??

Uninstall both McAfee and Norton.  You can get a better anti-virus
free from Grisoft.com.  McAfee and Norton will bug you to death forever.
You can edit your Registry if you have already uninstalled (not deleted),
McAfee.  Just type McAfee in Find and keep clicking F3 for all the finds
and rightclick to delete.

What Byte has recommended is pretty straight forward, but keep in mind
that any time you edit the registry you should back it up first. Errors
in editing the registry can make you machine unable to boot.

Stab 1, mcaffe is crap
stab 2, norton is crap
Remove both and install one of the less resource hogging free AV apps.

Not up on what might be 'best', less resource hogging, etc, might you
suggest one or two?

That's quite right...

BTW - the stab I was interested in was a simple understanding, explanation
how an antivirus pkg like McAfee creates blue screens!  Before I changed a
setting, there was a random machine Restart.  A newsgroup reply showed me
how to stop the Restarts which then brought up the blue screens.

Any application can cause a BSOD, poor drivers, a corrupt install, or in
coffee and nor tons case, large, bloated installations that try to do too
many things, and  fail miserably.

By coincidence (??), upon removal of McAfee, Norton Speed Disk now sees
drive 'C'.  Machine now running swift and smooth.

Can't help but ponder: after four months of holding off, did my not buying
McAfee's virus package have anything to do with the blue screens and
inability of Speed Disk to see drive 'C'??
