Is there anyway one can determine if the hosts file is being bypassed?
Today one of my scanners reported 17 spyware cookies, all of which are
listed in my hosts file.

Hi Lou , try using this prog ( free ) to see what cookies are trying
to get onto your system
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/cookie.htm
( You can keep , temp keep , or delete the cookie as you wish )

Sure.  Add some site to it that you visit regularly and see if it gets
blocked.
Or, try to go to one of the blocked sites listed in it, and see if it
succeeds.

Be sure the name is CAPITALIZED and has no extension.
Be certain it's located in the right folder.
Check Wikipedia or numerous online sources including MVP.org for proper
syntax, format, etc..  The MVP HOSTS file is a pretty decent one,
actually.  Be sure to get the .bat file along with it to prevent slowing
your computer due to its size; it's all explained on the site.
