Unable to Enable Automated Updates in Services

After updaing my PC's with the SP3 I am consistently getting the red shield
telling me to turn on my automated updates.  This is true as well with
Onecare making the same statement.  The SP3 also has deleted my restore
history making it now impossible to restore to a certain point any longer.  I
now have to setup a new restore point which really pisses me off.  Even after
the many and frustrating attempts to follow Microsoft Self-Help Options and
Solutions I find that there is nothing short o a fix apparently.  I have gone
into the SERVICES and manually made the selections accordingly and all I get
is:

(1058 Automated Update Disabled and/or has  no enabled devices) or
(url://c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm).

Regards to the first:  No duh, you cannot enable it, How much more redundant
can MS get?

Regards to the second: Well, so redundant that they can't even allow a
simplified means to correct something they allowed their programmers to
totally screw up.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, have you been forunate enough to gain
access to a fix? This issue has occured on both of my WINDOWS XP PC's and my
one and only VISTA Professional PC.

Thank you in advance for all you can provide to these issues.

From what I have read the solution is to uninstall Windows Live OneCare.
Run the tool in the link below and reinstall Windows Live OneCare.

Found this out through reading this conversation:
