I want to have .mid files open with a particular program vs WMP.
When I attempt to assign a new association using File Types/Folder Options
and "Change" the program I want to use is not listed and then I use the
"Browse" to the .exe of the application.  But when I do that there is no
change in the association and WMP remains the assigned application.   The
program I want to use, Power Tracks Pro (PTP), is not registered in windows
I guess as it does not show up in the "Programs" list under file types.

Is there a way to force the .mid or .midi file type to open then PTP?

thank you

See if this helps:
Open WMP.
Click Tools > Options > File Types tab.
Uncheck "midi file".
Click Apply > Ok.

Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Right click a Mid/Midi file and select "Open With" in the popup menu.
Select "Choose Program".
Make sure a check is in the box "Always use the selected......." at the botttom
of the list window.
Select your application.
Apply > Ok.

On the menu bar click Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab.
Scroll to Mid/Midi.
Click the Advanced button.
Click once on "Open" to hilite.
Click Edit.
The full path to the app should be in quotes the a space and then %1 in quotes
in the "Application used ......." input box.
ex: "D:\Program Files\Audio\Winamp\winamp.exe"  "%1"
The Action input box should be blank.

The same path for "Play in..." > Edit with the exception the Action input box
would have &Play in Power Tracks Pro

most excellent help.  Thank you!
I was able to assign the .mid with the latter set of instruction you
provided.  And now the PTP icon appears in the list of programs as well.

Thanks again Brian!

The latter set of instructions worked.
