When I download a screen saver from the internet, where should i save the
files?  If I just store them with the defaults that appear with the screen
saver, then when I go change my screen saver on the control panel, the screen
saver I just downloaded does not appear in the list.

Save it anywhere you like. To find it from the ScreenSaver tab of
Display Properties, use the 'Browse' button.

Be very cautious about downloading screensavers from the internet - many
are loaded with spyware.

Download it anywhere. But then right click on the Screensaver and choose
Install.
now The screensaver will appear in Screen Savers tab.
