Can anyone tell me how to change my system's default view of folders and
files to 'Detail'?  The only option I've found now is to change every single
file or folder individually.

1.Go to a folder [ Any folder ]
2.Change it's View to details [ Or whatever you like ]
3.Choose Folder Options from the View menu.
4.Go to View tab
5.Click Apply to all folders

Search this newsgroup and find the 1-2 million articles and instructions on
how to do that.

I'm going to throw another one into the pot,,,
any one know how to change the open/save dialog boxes file view to a
different default eg. icons
There's a software package I have heard of that replaces the open/save
dialog boxes - but how about just changing Microsofts itself

It's not easily changed -- no registry setting -- it's hardcoded:List View for everything except 'My
Pictures' which defaults to thumbnails.

The application you are looking for is FileEx, and it is freeware ... tons
of uses, including what your are asking for.
