Windows Forum / Windows XP / Customization / October 2007Changing white font color to black on the desktop...nothing works!
--This is probably an easy fix but I can't for the life of me figure it out. I have a light colored background selected and want to change my font color under the icons to black, but when i go into Display and pick either Desktop or Appearances and get the choice of Black and then check *apply* nothing happens. It says Wait but there is no change. I still have white font color and the only way I can see it is to put a shadow behind it using ClearType. I used to be able to do this. The only change I think i have made to the computer is to download the ClearType program by Microsoft. I can't find how to delete that in programs either....is that my problem? Did that remove my option to change the font color? If so, how do I remove ClearType from my programs? If ClearType is not the culprit how do I get black font color on the desktop? The writing under the icons on my desktop remain white. I can change the color of the screen behind them from white to black and all the choices they give you for background color, but the color of the writing on the desktop remains white, even when I change the background color to white. All I see then is the shadow I put in to be able to read the words. At a loss here.....Cleartype does not appear to have anything to do with this desktop appearance option... Note that you will lose the desktop background image where there are icon labels. IOW, you will have "holes" in your wallpaper when drop shadows are disabled. If you don't want the holes, you'll need to go back to using drop shadows but that means the text will be white again. Personally, I've edited some of my lighter wallpapers. I made a copy of the wallpaper and then using a graphics program, darkened the edges so that the white text/drop shadows would be easier to read. The program you downloaded only tunes ClearType to adjust it's settings. ClearType doesn't put a shadow behind it (well actually it can but that's a bug). Make sure that drop shadows are disabled (Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance Settings->Custom->Use drop shadows.).
