I'd like to edit some of those icon files. If I do that, will XP still let
me use them? Or is there some kind of check-sum that would prevent me from
editing the colors or replacing an icon or two in the *.dll files?

I would not fool around editing the ico files within a.dll, .cpl or .exe
file. If you extract the ico files first, that's one thing.
