Windows Forum / Windows XP / Customization / March 2007New motherboard and old hd?
Hi all, I had a motherboard blow out on me on an XPH machine. I bought a new one (different make/model) so me question is after I replace the motherboard, how do I re-install XP Home without loosing all my programs and data from the original hard drive? I do have the OEM cd that can do repair installs. thanks, charles...... Charles: Is it possible that when your motherboard 'blew out' it took other components with it? You might have a larger hardware problem than you think. Hopefully not. Also, OEM installations are typically BIOS-locked to the original motherboard. That usually works, but occcasionally it's not good enough and you have to do a clean installation. There are no other hardware problems and the cd is a generic oem disk so installing on another computer/motherboard is no problem. It's been over 120 days so the software install should be no problem. A clarification, though. That means they can't do upgrade installations. It does *not* mean they can't do repair installations. Even if it were under 120 days, you could activate by voice call to an 800 number, and that's quick and easy.
