I'm trying to get a customised icon for a program which opens PHP
files.

Using Tools>Folder Options>File Types shows there is no association
for PHP, so I add it and navigate to both the program to open it and
its custom icon. However, this setting is lost, and association/icon
returns to the original (Notepad). Certainly, I can change the
association with the right-click "open with" dialogue, but cannot
select a custom icon from there.

So, I think it's necessary to head for the Registry. Where do I find
the file/icon associatons?

THey should be in the first, top-most folder in your registry.  -- HK
Classes Root.  Look for a folder called .php.  If you don't find it,
make it.  Then search neighboring folders until you find one that has
a custom program and custom icon entry.  Follow the pattern in those
to create custom entries for your php file associations.

If that doesn't work, you might need to make a string for Persistent
Handler.  I don't know how to do that -- I have only imported them.

Thanks for the pointer, Lady Dungeness. I tried your method of
creating a folder, but it didn't help - the associations went missing
after I closed regedit.

But somehow, then going on to _delete_ that folder I'd inserted, and
step through the "Folder Options" routine again allowed me to create
the custom icon I wanted along with the program to open the PHP
script. Very strange, but it worked in the end!
