IE icon missing, desktop and display properties

Brad - 15 Nov 2007 16:54 GMT I just reloaded WinXPpro sp2, ran all critical updates using "administrator" and added 'my docs, my comp, IE, network' icons to desktop via "Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Desktop Icons".
Now here's the problem: I added the 3 userID's that will be using this Pc, while setting them up I did the same as "administrator" turning on desktop icons BUT the "Internet Explorer" check box and label are missing from the "Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Desktop Icons" area. It's now missing using the 'adminstrator' logon also.
And here's the question: How do I get it back so that I can turn it "on / off" using "Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Desktop Icons"?
I used the registry hack; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDe sktopIcons\ NewStartPanel. Once there, locate {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} in the list on the right. Right click on it and select Modify. Change the value equal to 0. Reboot your computer.
to get the "IE" icon back onto my desktop but that doesn't give me back the ability to use the "Display Properties" to make on/off changes.
Any ideas on how it vanished and how do I get it back?

Michel Heuvelmans - 19 Nov 2007 19:54 GMT Ask MS! ;-) I think a BUG I can easily replicate the problem by installing this KB hot fix (English version)

Thanks for the information. I was about to blame it on some business software that I also installed. Instead of uninstalling the Patch you can get the IE (original) icon on the desktop by using a registry hack I mentioned in my original post. Although I'd like to have the check box and wording returned to the "desktop customization" area. Brad

Michel Heuvelmans - 21 Nov 2007 16:41 GMT I had spoken confirmation from MS

Assessment
No solution for it because this is a known issue Problem will be solved with SP3 or hopefully sooner Asked customer to uninstall the update and wait until SP3 comes out or a new update for this known issue

Next action customer: n/a Next action Microsoft: n/a Next contact: n/a
So maybe before comes a hot fix or not…

Thanks Michael! I just noticed it the last couple days and though maybe one of my own scripts was causing it! LOL.

Brad - 25 Nov 2007 19:47 GMT Is it just me or my imagination, but my WinXP tells me that "this update cannot be removed". Is there a way of removing it or are we stuck with it until MS 'maybe' decides to deal with it? Brad

Brad - 26 Nov 2007 17:46 GMT Brian,
Were you able to remove it through the std. 'add n remove' in control panel? My machine says it can't be removed and I don't have a "remove" button to click on.

How do we removed the update that can't be removed?
> Brian, > [quoted text clipped - 40 lines] > > > > Brian H8_The_KB943460. - 08 Dec 2007 18:17 GMT Hmmmm I removed it on many machines now.. KB943460 is akin to a virus if you ask me...
Although it does pop up and say programs may not work right after the KB943460 is removed
I said screw it and did it anyway.. all the programs that it said were supposed to have problems.. have all been fine with the thing removed...

A couple of you guys say you've removed it but you still haven't answered the question as to how you did it.
How?
My machine doesn't give me a "Remove" button to remove it in "Add and Remove Programs". Are you using a different utility to remove it?

When I first discovered the problem, I did my homework and removed the kb943460 Patch from a PC to test it.After a reboot all is well again. On that note, I did a clean install of XP SP2 recently and installed that patch first, just to test it. Bad move on my part, Now I can't remove it after other updates were installled after it. **UPDATE*** Ok guys, this just in ! If you are trying to automatically remove this update from the Add/Remove Programs, and windows will not give you the Option to remove it, DO IT MANUALLY ! Here is how to do it: Browse to the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB943460$\spuninst\
Run the file spuninst.exe in that folder and manually remove the Hotfix. After
the reboot, everything should be good. Hope this helps everyone. ! Cheers !

Brad - 14 Dec 2007 23:06 GMT Robert,
Thanks for that info. I'll have to try that.
As an update, we have several Pc's running XP sp2 and I found one that didn't have IE7 yet but it had the perverbially kb943460 patch and it "has" the remove button available in 'add and remove programs' to uninstall that patch. My Pc's with IE7 AND kb943460 "don't" have the remove button available in 'add and remove programs'.
I'm wondering if this patch and IE7 have something in common. I haven't had time to load IE7 to find out but I'm going to test this Pc to see...curiosity is getting the best of me now. Does anyone know for sure?

My knowledge of computers is limited to basics and operational. The problem I'm facing is that when I'm starting my system running on XP SP2, after about 10-15 sec of full startup my desktop vanishes and only the background image stares at me...nothing is there on the screen incl start button etc and right click doesn't work too! After 15-20 secs the desktop appears to vanish again in some seconds. This repeats for some more time and then the desktop dosn't appear at all! I'm operating my system through "Task Manager". Otherwise the system is working perfectly. My hard disc is worn out and hence want to avoid reinstalling XP. Is there any solution that I can get from this elite and special group for XP? Thanks in advance

"Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315/en-us
1- If you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs already installed on your computer, update the programs and scan your computer. With luck, the programs will detect and remove the problem.
2- If the scan doesn't produce results, contact the program's technical support. Most of the major anti-virus/spyware programs will help you to remove an infection that their software did not detect.
3- Scan your system with /several/ of the better free online scanners, such as (no order implied):
Kaspersky Antivirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) Trend Micro Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan) Sophos (http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/sophos-threat-detection-test.ht ml) Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html) GrisSoft AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/34/ww/crp/0)
4- HijackThis is a hijacker detector and remover, but expanded with a lot of other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. More information here:

You can post your HiJack This logs in several forums (NOT here), such as this one:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/HijackThis_Logs_and_Infections_Removal_f27.h tml
If none of the above remove the malware, you may want to show the computer to a professional.

My knowledge of computers is limited to basics and [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > This repeats for some more time and then the desktop dosn't appear at > all! That really sounds like you've been the victim of malware; a virus, trojan, worm, malware dropper, several different types exist. If you think that's possible the best advice it to update and run your anti-virus application, followed by all of your spyware/malware detectors, at least 3 different ones such as Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Guard, Windows Defender, Windows Malicious software scanner, etc. etc. etc. Each and every one must be updated of course.
IS your desktop marked to display? It can be turned off in the desktop Properties area.
> I'm operating my system through "Task Manager". > Otherwise the system is working perfectly. I guess that would work and is a work-around. Since you DO manage to run your OS then, is all of your software working correctly? Or are there other problems? Have you looked in Event Viewer for any errors? Have you looked at your firewall logs and system logs? Have you tried running chkdsk? What were the results of each? Rather than using Task Manager, you could instead put the desktop onto a toolbar visible on the Task Bar with the Desktop properties.
> My hard disc is worn out and hence want to avoid reinstalling XP. I don't know what you mean by "worn out". Normally a disc works perfectly or it doesn't work at all if the physical drive has problems. If that's the case, you're running on borrowed time anyway and are about to experience a catastrophic failure. What do you mean by "worn out"? This could relate to the problems you're having of course.
> Is there any solution that I can get from this elite and special > group for XP? Thanks in advance There isn't anything "special" about this group: It's just a bunch of users, similar to you, who have opted to share their knowledge and experience with others in solving problems. Microsoft employees are not normally participants here and if they are it's just a volunteer effort, same as everyone else.
Answer those questions and maybe someone will have some better advice for you.
