To disable XP from displaying the Dimensions, Duration etc of AVI files, I
found this little trick on the inter-web:  Regsvr32 / u shmedia.dll.

Before I go off and do something stupid, does anyone know if this is a safe
practice?

The reason I ask is that in several folders I have quite a few AVI files and
Explorer is painfully slow at displaying the folder contents.

I realize that I can do this on a folder by folder basis (View -> Chose
Details etc), the problem here is that one must wait until Explorer has
finished - kinda defeats the purpose me thinks.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I went ahead and used this technique and have had no problems so far.

Seems ok.

Cheers...
