Hello group, thanks for reading. Is there a way to remove the above icon
from the Notification Area? I like to keep my desktop tidy, and I'd rather
just have a shortcut to "control hotplug.dll" in my start menu.

I have a USB scanner connected all the time, so it never goes away.

TIA Tony.

Tony Luxton,
Right click the Taskbar> Properties> Taskbar tab> Select Hide Icons>
Customize button> Click on the Safely Remove Hardware Icon> Select "Always
Hide" for that Icon> APPLY/OK your way out.

Hi, thanks for that. Not quite what I meant, though. I can of course "hide"
the icon, but what I want to do is stop whatever-it-is that's displaying it
in the first place, if possible. Maybe it's "hardwired" into Windows, and
can't be done?

Regards Tony.

Go with the latter...

You can completely hide it using third party software - but...  I believe
you are better off not doing this.

Tony,
Since you say this might be related to your scanner, try looking through the
software for your scanner, installed on your PC. In its
Options/Preference/Tools, see if there is a setting to initiate this program
at Windows Startup or have an look for a Update. If the program starts at
bootup, it might also initiated any driver for the scanner, which may be
causing the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon/task to appear even though the
scanner is not turned on.

No, it's not that. At least, it doesn't seem to be - I can't see any
programme running related to the scanner. I've downloaded "USB
Safely Remove" from here -

http://www.safelyremove.com

I'm just trying to see what changes it makes to the registry, and see if I
can see the answer there. I'll post back if I find anything.

Regards Tony.

Use Regmon to read the changes.

Well - using Regmon (thanks Kelly), the only changes I can see are under the
"safely remove" process itself. IOW, if "Safely Remove" wasn't installed,
the registry keys wouldn't be there. I've worked around it by disabling the
scanner in Device Manager (I only use it 2 or 3 times a week). It's not a
huge issue, I just like to tidy up the Notification Area.

Regards Tony.
