I have a 3 1/2 drive and an LS 120 drive on my machine.
When I reinstalled XP the allocation of drive letters
swapped round.  Is there a way of telling XP which drive
I want to be A and which B?

This works for hdd and cd drives: right click my computer and choose manage.
Open disk management in the left pane and in the right pane right click the
drive and select change drive letter and paths. You'll have to change one to
something like e first. Then change the other one before changing e back to
a or b.
