Hello all.  I've tried to get help at many places, but am
not getting any response.  My problem began when I
updated Windows XP:Home with all of the recent critical
updates (as of Jan. 10, 2004).  Afterward, whenever I
were to restart my computer or even simply log off of my
username (I'm the only user), my custom names/icons for
My Computer, My Desktop, and Recycle Bin, are reverted
back to their default states.  This is driving me insane;
enough to the point that I backed up my computer and
reinstalled Windows XP.  To no avail, whenever I restart
or log off, the icons do not remain the same.  I've tried
Kelly's fix, but that does not seem to work.  Please, any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Rich,

Exactly which "Kelly's fix" did you try?

Is your PC a Dell?

Is your graphics card a nVidea?

Thanks, my computer is not a Dell.  I tried the Line 30
Kelly's fix, the "save settings" one.  And I have an
nVidia 128mb Ti4200 graphics card.  Hope this helps,
thanks!

Rich,

Try this...

[Start]
| Run |
services.msc
[Enter]

Navigate to...
"NVIDIA Driver Helper Service"
click [Stop]

When "Service Status:" = "Stopped",
change "Startup Type:" to [ Disabled ]
[OK]

You might first need to do this...

Control Panel
NVIDIA Desktop Helper
 [Disable nView]
  [OK]

Jan,
I can't thank you enough.  Your advice solved the
problem, I just wish I hadn't gone through the hassle of
reseting my entire system!!  I guess it might have been
my newly updated nVidia driver.. do you know?  Thanks
again for the help.

Rich,

You are welcome!  Thank you for your feedback.

It would seem to be your newly updated nVidia driver.

Was it sufficient to stop the nVidea service, or did you need to [Disable nView] either before or after stopping the service?

Jan,
I did not have to disable nview because I stopped it
as soon as I installed the drivers.  I did have to stop
the service though.  Thanks again,
