If it's one of the colors that comes with an fx install cd or $18 walmart .
Try plugging it into another port. With it plugged in, work from pad to pc
and gently twist flex bend push pull  whatever on the wire and listen for
the ba-binks when it is discovered and lost. I've went through several of
these and it was always a wire problem. One of mine had the wrong drivers,
got it to work then it became erratic, broken wires.Returned it, the next
had the z axis backwards, took awhile to get used to pulling back to go
faster. The next worked in streaks. When it works there great when they
don't they go back. Don't forget about the mode button at the bottom, you
have to push it once to use the gimbles after you plug it in. Don't bother
looking for the company that made it, all you'll find is a bunch of people
looking for that xp driver you have so they can download it.

You may have gotten a bad one or you have another problem somewhere else.
I'd return it and get another. I have 3 of them and I really like them, but
I did run into several that problems, the next pad I buy to replace a worn
out one will be another axis pad.My girls love playing motocross madness
head to head and the microsoft pads couldn't take more than 5 minutes, the
girls axis pad is going on 2 months.
