Installation conflict

A program I installed failed to recognice the very same
CD it was installed from, therefore preventing me from
using the program. (My group policy is restrictive but
liberal).
I have noticed others have encountered similar problems
with programs concerning the past milenium (ie. 1998).
It could very well be this glich occur's due to
programming motivated by the general miserable moral
standards among users, forcing hard-working programmers
to find copy-prevention measures and, if useful,
disregarding the effects their programming will have for
other users, namely those who choose to buy rather than
steal.

Hi Antti,

If you want to try troubleshooting that issue, please read on.  :-)

1.  Before we begin, please save a restore point for your system.
How to use Windows XP System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp

2.  You might be affected by problems similar to the Insert CD error.
   - Try the advice and DL at: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228985
Another trick that I found sometimes works is to make the limited account an
administrator account and run that game once.  This should create the registry
settings and permissions for that user to be able to properly run the game.

3.  Kazaa or Kazaa light is installed on your system.
    - Uninstall the game(s) and Kazaa, and reinstall from original CD.

4.  Multiple CD drives on your system including Virtual CD drives.
   -  Disconnect all but the main CD drive and try the game.  You
might have an older drive, or a CD Writer which is incompatible
with the Safe Disk copy protection on the CD.  (Contact Vendor).

5.  Your antivirus or application firewall might be conflicting with it.
    - Disable the software temporarily.

6.  There might be a patch available for your game to correct the issue.
   - Try www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a/ or the game's site.

7.  Your desktop may need to be set at least 800x600 and 16 colors.
   - Click Start / (Settings) Control Panel / Click Display

8.  Your Video, Sound, or Monitor drivers may need updating.
   - Try updating your Video drivers using the instructions at:
      http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

9.  You might have software running on your system which is causing conflicts.
   - Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with Firewall,
AV, and ad blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php
You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
       http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

10.  Maybe a Microsoft Security patch is the culprit.  The only way to be sure is
to Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows using
    this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

After you reboot, try the game again.  If it works, save a new restore point.

Lastly, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall, plug back
into your Internet connection and install all Critical and Recommended updates
from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com one at a time.  Test the game after
each update to find which is causing the game not to start on your PC.  :-)

Hello Jimmy S.

You are quite right, I should be more serious about such
issues. Your initial reference for problem solution does
not comply.
The game is Battle Isle: The Andosia War, I have had it
install before and ran it without any problems. However,
I had to uninstall Win XP and reinstall, consequently
forcing me to back up what I had installed at that time,
including the game in question.
After installing XP again; I decided to install the game
anew as well and, just recover the save game files.
I am the only user of this machine, an ASUS PEP4, 2,53
GHz, 333 FSB chipset, nVidia Ti 4200 128 MB, DVD/CD-combo
and so on.
There is only one account on this system and that is the
administrator - me..
I have tried to contact both BlueByte and Cauldron for
assistance, but I am afraid those companies only exist as
binary compositions on innocent servers.
I have tried various measures in order to succeed but
every time I try to run the game it insists to gain
access to the original CD - - I only have that one
original CD, had I had a copy I would have tried that as
well.
Measures include, closing background runners, firewalls,
anti-viras and all down, to prevent any impeding programs
from disrupting the installation.
By the way, I also successfully registered my CD on
www.bluebyte.com, alas, no improvement of conditions.
Could it be that the problem exists in the element that
the program was installed before and therefore the
installation recognizes my re-installation as a copy,
even though it is the original?

Yours truly

Hi Antti,

Since you've exhausted that list, there's still another solution
to apply here.  Based on the information you posted, you've
reinstalled that game.  Perhaps it wasn't totally completed:

Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch):

Step A:   Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with
Firewall, Antivirus & AdBlockers using this method:
              http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796 or this utility:
http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php  Reboot, go to Step B.

Step B:   In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then
the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems
with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc.

Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game.  Many times there are two installs
of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one.   Also if you
installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict..  Uninstall it
and delete the folder.

Step C:   Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any stray registry keys for the
game, delete them.  Reboot your computer, and then re-install the game.
              Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Step D:   Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary.

Step E:   Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt.
Double click the patch/mod to install it.  If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the
game's  folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file.

Step F:   Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and
re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A.

Cheers,
Jimmy S.

Hello again,

No I have attempted all those measures except Your reg-
cleaner. I usually clean the registry database manually.
I have a daily recovery point made. Used your regcleaner
and it deleted my backup of the game... Now, how do I
repair the mess reg-cleaner left behind?

Could it be there is a registry entry the installation
refers to, but does not appear to be connected to the
game installation? The back-up of the game resides on a
physically different hard-drive and it seems NT file
system recognices all my drives as one?

I have downloaded all patches (9 in all) and some install
okay and patch up the execusion, however, three of them
are themselves in need of patching up for they prompt
back: "Old file not present" - what gives?

I am afraid this may very well be a dead duck, unless You
retain more advice - I've been hacking at it for six days
now, there is no god!

Sincerely Yours
Antti

Hello yet again,

I think You should take a closer look at Regclenr at
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html, it behaves
maliciously and does not operate reliably. I do believe
it is pure crap and only available for marketing purposes.

Hi,

I downloaded that program just now in case there were any
changes and it remains reliable.  I selected 2 specific games,
deleted their entries, and then restored them from the backup
that the program created by default.  You too can restore the
changes that you made by using the backup feature.  HTH!

Dear Jimmy,

I am afraid You digress, the backup feature does only
funktion for registry editions on my download!

The issue however is not Regclenr.exe but rather the
Bluebyte misfortune renouned Battle Isle product.

I have uncovered additional information, but will venture
to the other stream.

Hey there again, sorry for the inconveinience,

I thought it would be interesting for You to know, that
when I access (double clik) the BITAW.exe file on the CD-
ROM it-self, the exe file returns with the prompt:

"Disk verification error. Please insert your original
BI:TAW CD-ROM".

Now, has this got any significance to the current issue
or...?

Your very truly
Antti
