A series of everything  going wrong, but my determination not to revert to
new install has resulted in some new tools being acquired.  I'll not list
what wasn't working but state that I was disappointed in not being able to
use the suggestion by "Gamma" when using the Recovery Console and typing
these lines in.

cd system32\config [enter]
ren system system.old [enter]
ren system.alt systemalt.old [enter]
copy c:\windows\repair\system [enter]
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system [enter]
exit

Somehow the standard password I used for the system administrator wouldn't
work and that kept me from using the above solution.  However, after
changing
the password I was able to use the above.  Everything seems to work, even
System restore but my CD-DVD won't show on the Root Drive.

In Device Manager it reads:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for the hardware. The driver may be
crrupted or missing (code 39)

And troubleshoot didnt help.  Ive uninstalled and reinstalled three times.
And Plug and play works OK

Using WP Pro, pentium 4  2.4GHz
The optical device description: AOPEN DUW1616/ARR

Any help is appreciated,
