2 part question:

Why can't I see com ports listed in device manager?

How can I keep a port open?  I am using a primitive dial-up utiltiy to
access some remote data.  The utility can't open the com port - needs to be
left open.

Thanks!!

1. Enable them in the BIOS.
2. Don't let power management put them to sleep.

I think they are enabled as the com port in question is assigned to the modem
which works fine for other applications, but I will double check the bios.

This is my first maching with XP Media Center - I have no category in device
manager for Ports (COM &LPT) like I have always seen - not sure if there is a
place to enable this.  Not sure if this may be all involved in firewall
protection??

Internal modem is "seen" as a COM port, which is not the same as a
hardware COM port. If you are "transmitting" over the modem then you
will need to establish a connection to remote modem.

Are these COM ports directly on the motherboard, add-in cards or USB to Serial
adapters?

Have you check the computer's BIOS screen?  The COM ports may be "disabled"
in s section in the BIOS screens.

I'm assuming motherboard, but certain.  The port in question is used by the
internal modem.  The modem dials out fine (for example if used by fax
terminal, hyperterminal or winfax) but not for the program in question.  I'm
assuming these other programs are more sophisticated and open the port
themselves??
