How to "backup" program

I am looking for a program to backup my whole hard drive. I use Windows XP
Home and I have an extra 250GB hard-drive in the same tower which I will use
as the backup for the main hard-drive. When I got my computer brand new
from Futureshop in Canada I got one disc that was labelled Recovery Disc
with contains the operating system (Windows XP) and essential programs that
were loaded on the computer. I did not get a Windows XP disc. I
checked...my computer...all programs...accessories...system
tools...backup--- and it was not there as
the link to the Microsoft site said it would be. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

If you just have a recovery disk you may be out of luck as I expect it is an
image file and you can't access the progs on the XP disk.

Hi Tass,

You could search the web for the Ntbackup.exe file, like this you will be
able to backup some interesting stuff... Anyway, this program is not as
reliable as others you could pay for.

NTBackup does NOT backup all of windows

The easiest would be to "image" the whole disk.

Look for programs like
Terabyte Unlimited's "Image for Windows/DOS"
Symantec's "Ghost"
Acronis' "TrueImage"
Runtime Software's "DriveImage XML"
etc...

Although I agree that most people are better off with a disk imaging program
NTBackup does back up all of Windows.

You should take a look at disk imaging programs. Here are some links:

I don't recomend you use the extra drive in your computer for backups. You
should buy an external drive or buy a case for an external drive and install
the second drive in it. Having your backup permanently in your computer is
not a good idea. If there is a problem with the power supply or motherboard
both drives may be corrupted or damaged at the same time. You are also not
protected from fire, flood, theft, user error, viruses, and more. Backups
are best stored somewhere other than on your computer.
