BIOS sees new memory - Windows does not

I've added 2 GB of memory (total of 4 GB)

The bios sees both new dimms, and when doing the detailed memory test
at bootup does not find any errors.

However 'My Computer' only reports 3 GB.

I've switched the memory in the two banks.  When using only the new
memory in the original config (slots 1 & 3) Windows reports 2 GB; same
when it's only the original memory in slots 1 & 3.

It's only when all 4 slots are filled that Windows seems to lose one
stick.

Does this have anything to do with the single vs dual?

Suggestions on next steps?

Thanks.

Memory:
Original: each stick is 1GB DDR 3200 400 mhz single modu
New:  each stick is 1GB DDR 3200 400 mhz Dual

ABIT boards do not run well with dual & single sided memory installed
at same time, actually IC7 series doesnt run well at all with single sided.
Also, the 875 intel chipset is designed for dual only....

WinXP (Home and Pro, 32bit versions) can only see/use 4GB of memory, out of
which it reserves various amount of memory for I/O, video and such.
The best amount of memory I've seen in these newsgroups is 3.2GB, but I've
seen as low as 2.6GB when the user had a SLI ....
