Post reinstall XP drivers question

After a reformat and clean reinstall of XP, is there an EXACT correct
sequence to install the following please?

Service Pack 2
Windows Updates
Chipset INF file
Additional Drivers needed but not installed by XP automatically during the
reinstall.(video...audio...etc)

I think I understand correctly that the chipset drivers (INF file) should go
in before the non XP installed drivers are installed, but I'm unclear as to
whether or not I should install Service Pack 2 (I have the CD) and download
and install the XP Windows Updates before or after I install the chipset
driver.

I normally get all the hardware working correctly and then do the updates. Without the proper
drivers installed the system may not be running as well as it should. Do the motherboard/chipset
drivers first, then video drivers so you can see better what you are doing.

Thank you for the reply David.
This would be my reasoning as well. The main cause for my "confusion" about
installing the Intel chipset driver before service pack 2 is that when I was
checking the Asus site and looking at the readme for the latest updated
chipset INF file for my Asus P4C800-e deluxe board, (which is much newer
than the INF on my Asus CD) it says it's optimized for use with SP2. This
left me with some ambiguity as to the exact installation sequence to use as
far as the chipset vs service pack2 was concerned.
I take it from what you have said that this isn't an issue and that doing
the chipset then the system drivers will stabilize the system, then doing
the service pack and updates is the way to go?

Yes it should not be an issue, SP2 will see if some driver files are newer and should (SHOULD) not
replace them. Without the chipset drivers the hard drives may only run in PIO mode and they will be
extremely slow. If you can use a slipstreamed XP/SP2 that would be the best way to go.

Many thanks. I've been using the SP2 CD that Microsoft sent me. I've never
tried slipstreaming it in with the install. Maybe I better quit while I'm
ahead :-))

Thanks. I think I understand about the manufacturer. Asus might include some
"tweaks" of their own over and above what Intel deems necessary for the
Intel chipset to maximize the driver for their exact mobo , so the
manufacturer of the motherboard is the first choice for the chipset
drivers??

My order would be :
Install XP
Chipset and mobo drivers (download the latest from mfg (FIREWALL on))
Service Pack 2
Windows Updates
Additional Drivers needed but not installed by XP automatically during the
reinstall.(video...audio...etc)

And SP2 is easily slipstreamed on to XP..

1. Enable Firewall! Do NOT let XP connect to the internet before the
firewall has been enabled. If this means disconnecting the LAN cables
during installation of XP, so be it.

2. Motherboard Chipset Utilities (on the grounds that Windows does not even
see some things correctly until these are installed.

3. Additional Drivers... but keep as little connected during the clean
install as possible.... Printers and Scanners (etc) need to be disconnected
prior to the installation. Reinstall them when everything else is done.
They are not essential until the basics are completed.

4. Service Pack 2 - but a better way is to create a slipstream CD so that
you install a version of Windows XP which includes SP2.

5. 60+ Critical Updates (as at end October 2006) Yes, we all know it's
time for an SP3 but apparently Vista comes first.

Thanks Cari. Firewall is number 1, The cable modem has a hardware firewall
as well.

Cari;
One additional question if I may.
If a reinstall of XP has done and the chipset drivers were "forgotten" and
everything else was put in normally, then the chipset drivers remembered and
installed after the fact; is this a fatally flawed installation of XP or can
it be saved by uninstalling the non windows installed drivers and
reinstalling them again?
This happened to me once and I always wondered what the answer should have
been :-)

Besides all the previous recommendations, here are others:

1) Slipstreaming -- Creates a new install CD with SP2 "merged" into the setup
files. If you want to do this the easy way, look for Autostreamer.

2) Install the "base" XP when the PC is not connected to the the Internet. Do
not connect the modem or LAN. Easy to get hack without firewall or anti-virus
protection first installed.

3) Activate firewall.

4) Install anti-virus

5) Do all the latest driver installs.

6) Windows Updates --- Ignore any/all driver updates from this web site. Can
cause more problems than what they solve.

Good idea. I was assuming the hardware firewall in the router/modem would do
until I had the XP wall back up. I can just disconnect the modem and
reconnect it after the reinstall.
