added new hardware but where is the icon that allows me to use it
{scanner}test on the scanner said it's ready but how do I get it to work

scanner to the PC?

Different scanners and manufacturers do it differently.
Check the documentation that came with your scanner.
Otherwise check with the scanner manufacturers website.

You should read the documentation that came with the scanner and follow the
directions contained therein.

Most scanners require that you install the drivers and software *BEFORE* you
connect the scanner for the first time.
