I recently reinstalled XP with SP2 and all the downloaded updates. Now when I put a CD in either my CD reader/writter or DVD reader/writter it is not recognized. The drives spin and lights blink but nothing else happens. There has been no change in my hardware since I last had a functioning system and both drives worked properly. The reason I reinstalled XP was because checkdisk ran and "fixed" my system drive so well that most of it was corrupted and unuseable. I've run the troubleshooter, removed and reinstalled the hardware through the device manager all to no avail. If anybody has any suggestions how to fix this I'd really appreciate it because it's a real pain to have to use the reader in my laptop over my LAN. This isn't the first time I've had to reinstall XP but it is the first time this has happened. I can't swear to it but I'm fairly sure the drives worked at some point after the installation but then quit when I installed something else or an update was installed. Roxio? Zone Alarm? Norton AutoProtect? The closest things are the drivers etc. for my Cannon scanner and Nortion Internet Security 2007. One other thing when the system starts up I get an error message about MOM.EXE failing to initialize. I have no idea what it is but there are copies of it in "E:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\mom.exe" and "E:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\MOM.EXE-03DBA3E3.pf". I think I may have omitted some vital information. the reason checkdisk ran originally is because it appears my system drive may be failing. The S.M.A.R.T. data for the drive shows what appears to be a high error rate and when I boot the system I heve been getting an error message to the effect that MOM.EXE failed to initialize properly. That message didn't appear today and one of the CDs worked. It would appear the disk is dying and needs to be replaced which will happen next week. If the problem returns after I've installed the new drive and put the OS on it I'll post another thread. Thanks for your input and time. I'm now running from a new install on a new harddrive which allows me to reply to you, the old wouldn't because of glitches. I tried the manufacturers (Seagate) diagnostic which failed to work on my SATA drive after I had already ordered a replacement. I bought a WesternDigital this time because this was the second Seagate drive that failed WAY to soon. Thanks for your help. I replaced my system disk and reinstalled most of my software yet again. The problem has resurfaced, except now the CD will occasionally read a disk. It shows as OK in the device manager and CDCheck shows it to be not ready (error code 21). Usually all that happens when I insert a disk is the light on the drive blinks for a bit and then stops without spinning up the disk. Very occasionally the disk will spin up and be readable but this is rare. Another thing that may or may not mean anything is that I was unable to reply to your last post using IE7, I had to install the Opera browser to post this reply. Any further thoughts? I use Agent for email and newsgroups but can't locate this group in it even after refreshing the list. On the drive issue it reads every time I try to boot from it from the BIOS also I have a Memorex DVD drive that has the same problems so I question the hardware issue. One thing that occurs to me is that I've installed the ATI multi-media stuff that came with my video card and it has some CD apps as part of it, I wonder if they could be interfearing?
