Can I use my Sony Digital video camera ( sony trv-25e ) as a webcam when
attached to my PC via USB or possibley Firewire ? Must I use a capture card
or can I just plug it in via USB and expect it to be recognised by Skype or
MSN messenger for example?

I have not done it for awhile but it worked with ICQ, So yes. I used a
Samsung DV camcorder.

You might need a driver, just like any webcam...but otherwise it should
work.

If I use 'USB Mode' the Pc can see the camera but it cannot relate the
camera to the chat program.
It seems to me that the only way is to use a capture card.
I have a USB connector cable to the vid cam -do I need some other connector
?

Looks like you have easy access to the device's memory, but somehow you need
to make the camera present in the Scanners and Cameras control panel. The
manufacturer *may* have a driver for that.

For a capture card, maybe, depends on the type of card. Some use composite
video.
