Windows bug causes DVD drive bizarre behavior?

Hi,

I have the following problem with _NEC ND-3650A DVD+-RW drive on my Dell
Optiplex 745 desktop with Windows XP SP3:

It does not recognize DVD-R disks with data, no matter whether burnt on the
same computer or on another one.

What is bizarre is the following:

1) Previously (a few months ago) it did recognize DVD-R disks with data.

2) When a DVD-R disk is inserted in the DVD drive, the name of the
drive shown by Windows changes from DVD-RW to CD.

3) It reads DVD-RW disks, DVD movies, DVD+R disks, CD-Rs and audio CDs fine
- the problem concerns only DVD-R data disks.

4) The disks that are not recognized by this computer are recognized fine
by another computer.

5) The disks not recognized by the DVD drive nevertheless are recognized -
on the same computer! - by disk recovery programs (IsoBuster, CDRoller) that
see all the files on the disk and are ready to recover them.

6) While the DVD drive does not recognize DVD-R disks, Roxio Creator Home
is still ready to burn them (although afterwards the disks it burns are not
recognized on the same computer).

7) The driver for the DVD drive is up to date (1.08c). The Windows XP SP3 is
up to date.

I strongly suspect that the problem is caused by some Windows update.

I cannot restore the system to a point where the disks were still recognized
- it
was a long time ago.

Please help!

Many thanks in advance,
Michael

What software are you trying to use to burn the DVD disks?  Some
"packet reading" tools (like InCD or Roxio Drag to Disk) can cause
problems.
